Xenical is to treat people who are overweight or obese. This medicine works by targeting the absorption of dietary fat in your body rather than suppressing your appetite.

Dietary fats are large molecules that need to be broken down before they can be absorbed into the body. They are broken down by enzymes called lipases. That is, lipases play an important role in the digestion of dietary fat. When taken with a meal, Xenical interferes with the activity of these enzymes. This allows about 30% of the fat eaten in the meal to pass through the gut undigested. Therefore, your body cannot store these excess calories as fatty tissue or use them as a source of energy. This helps you to reduce your weight by burning up fat that you are already carrying, maintain your lower weight and minimise any weight regain. Losing even small amounts of weight and keeping it off produces additional health benefits for you, especially when you are at risk for other diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Xenical can also help to improve risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar. If these are not treated, they could lead to other diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Xenical should be taken in conjunction with a well-balanced calorie-controlled diet and other appropriate measures such as exercise.Active Ingredients:Xenical does not contain sucrose, gluten, tartrazine or any other azo dyes. What are the risks of weight loss medicines?

Weight loss medicines are medications that work by increasing the amount of fat absorbed from a person’s food and by limiting the amount of calories that are consumed. The medicines are used to help people lose weight, but some of the side effects are serious. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Headache
  • Stomach cramps
  • Weight gain
  • Diarrhoea

Most weight loss medicines are safe for people who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher to reduce the risk of heart disease.

While weight loss medicines are safe for people who have a BMI of 30 or higher to reduce the risk of heart disease, they can also have serious side effects that should not be ignored:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Anxiety

All weight loss medicines can cause side effects that are serious and can include but are not limited to:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol

However, these serious side effects of weight loss medicines can also occur in people who have had a recent heart attack.

Most people who have a previous heart attack or a recent heart attack who take medicines called ‘anti-obesity drugs’, such as phentermine (Lupron), are not at risk of this side effect. However, some people who have had a recent heart attack may have side effects that are serious enough to be life threatening.

Other medicines that are sometimes used to treat these side effects include:

  • Xenical
  • Naltrexone
  • Bupropion
  • Bupropion (Zyvox)
  • Etodosa

It is very important to monitor your weight loss progress regularly, especially if you’re feeling particularly ill.

If you’re not feeling well, or if your weight loss has not materialised, you should contact your GP or health professional for advice.

If you have any concerns about your weight loss, we encourage you to speak with your GP.

How to manage weight loss medicines

Your GP or health professional will be able to prescribe weight loss medicines that help you lose weight, but they will also be able to prescribe weight loss medicines that will not help you lose weight. The medicines you take will be carefully monitored, and if you are feeling unwell, or if you feel like you’re unable to lose weight, the medicine you take will need to be gradually reduced.

There are a number of weight loss medicines that can be bought online, but it is important to read the information leaflet and consult with your GP before taking any weight loss medication. If you are considering making weight loss changes, it is important that you check the information leaflet carefully and speak with your GP or health professional.

This will ensure you check the information leaflet carefully and talk with your GP or health professional about the medicines you need to use.
